Meditation: Increasing our Focus

Dear parents and guardians,

Based on many of the weekly progress reports, I have seen that overall, the students in our class need to improve their ability to focus.    In a world with video games and movies, sometimes it is hard to focus.  Starting on Monday, December 9th for 5 MINUTES at the end of the day, we are going to do breathing exercises to increase our inner calm.  Please have your student bring ONE small-medium stuffed animal on Monday.   Feel free to comment on this blog or contact me if you have any questions.

Building Houses for our Climates

Last week, we worked on making graphs of temperature and precipitation of different cities around the world.  Using the data partners collected, we engineered houses to address as many weather related hazards one may encounter in their city. Check out some of our houses that we presented to Mr. Miller's class!

The Great Mouse Plot

Yesterday we began reading selections Boy: Tales of Childhood by Roald Dahl.  Some of you may know this famous author, as he has written many other popular stories like James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and MORE!

We are reading this book to help us understand PERSONAL NARRATIVES.  Personal narratives are TRUE stories that we write about our own lives.  Boy: Tales of Childhood is Roald Dahl's autobiography (book he wrote about himself).  Check this book out from your local library to read the whole book!

Me on the Map

Today, we have been working on our "Me on the Maps" books.  We have learned that SOME maps need a map key/legend and that maps are drawn from a "bird's eye view."

September 17th Learning

Today we had a visit from local farmers through a program known as "Slow Foods."  Slow food is food made from scratch, meaning you use natural ingredients.

Today we learned about the process of growing green beans and we also cooked some with olive oil and salt.
